OpenAI confirmed that Chris Malone, its head of data centers, has left after 17 months, according to The Next Web.

OpenAI has reorganized its infrastructure team and appointed a chief technology officer to lead computing capacity. Other executives are now leading renewed work to lease entire data center facilities.

Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025, shortly after the company announced Stargate with Oracle and SoftBank. The program is intended to add computing capacity for OpenAI models, with a flagship site under construction in Abilene, Texas.

The company has not given a reason for Malone's departure and has not named the new chief technology officer for computing capacity.
