OpenAI Backs AI-Generated Animated Film 'Critterz'
OpenAI is backing the production of 'Critterz', an AI-generated animated film scheduled for a global theatrical release in 2026. The film, which aims to debut at the Cannes Film Festival, will leverage OpenAI's tools and computing resources to demonstrate that AI can produce movies faster and more cost-effectively than traditional Hollywood methods, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The production involves collaboration with London-based Vertigo Films and Los Angeles-based Native Foreign. The project is notably accelerated to a nine-month production timeline, significantly shorter than the typical three years for animated films. With a budget of less than $30 million, the film will utilize OpenAI's GPT-5 and DALL·E technologies alongside traditional human voice actors and hand-drawn sketches.
'Critterz' builds on the success of a 2023 short film that combined OpenAI's DALL·E technology with traditional animation. Directed by Chad Nelson, the short was well-received on the festival circuit, including selections at Annecy, Tribeca, and Cannes Lions. The feature-length version will explore a world shared by AI creatures and humans, with writers James Lamont and Jon Foster contributing to the screenplay.
Despite the innovative approach, producers have expressed concerns about the perception of AI-generated films as inauthentic, while the creative workforce continues to advocate for protections against job displacement. Nonetheless, OpenAI remains committed to supporting the film's production, aiming to push the boundaries of generative storytelling.
