November 25, 2025
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive have unveiled the first prototype of their upcoming AI hardware device, describing it as simple, screenless, and designed to create a calmer user experience than current smartphones.

At an event hosted by Laurene Powell Jobs, Sam Altman and Jony Ive revealed that OpenAI has completed the first prototype of its forthcoming AI hardware device. The project, developed following OpenAI’s acquisition of Ive’s design company, aims to deliver a new kind of personal technology experience.

Altman described the prototype as simple and minimal, suggesting that its design will surprise people with its understated form. He said the device is intended to feel more peaceful and calm than modern smartphones, contrasting it with the constant stimuli of devices like the iPhone.

The product is reportedly screenless and pocket-sized, designed to rely on AI that can filter information, manage tasks, and interact contextually based on the user’s needs. Altman said the system should know when to present information or request input, allowing users to trust it over time.

Ive added that the device will appear simple but will rely on sophisticated technology, emphasizing the importance of creating products that feel intuitive and approachable. He confirmed that the hardware could be available within two years.
