Meta Signs Deal for Space-Based Solar Power from Overview Energy
Meta has signed an agreement with Overview Energy to receive up to one gigawatt of solar energy collected in space and transmitted to Earth, according to Bloomberg. The deal gives Meta preferential access to Overview Energy's planned orbital power capacity, aimed at supplying continuous clean electricity for its artificial intelligence data centers.
Overview Energy is developing satellites that collect sunlight in orbit and beam it to Earth, where it can be converted into electricity. The company plans to conduct its first orbital demonstration in 2028 and begin commercial power delivery in 2030. Each satellite will gather solar energy continuously, unaffected by weather or time of day.
Meta did not disclose financial details of the agreement. The company’s vice president of energy and sustainability said the partnership is intended to secure uninterrupted energy for Meta’s growing AI operations. Overview Energy, based in Virginia, expects its network of satellites to eventually provide global coverage for large solar farms on the ground.
