Insider Threats and AI Complexities Escalate File Security Risks

A study by the Ponemon Institute, sponsored by OPSWAT, reveals that 61% of organizations have faced insider breaches, with AI complexities further increasing file security risks.

A recent study conducted by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by OPSWAT reveals that insider threats and the complexities of artificial intelligence (AI) are significantly increasing file security risks for organizations. Announced in a press release, the report highlights that 61% of enterprises have experienced file-related breaches due to negligent or malicious insiders, with each incident costing an average of $2.7 million.

The study underscores the fragile state of file security, noting that while many organizations are adopting AI for faster detection and cost savings, adversaries are exploiting AI models to embed prompts in macros or expose hidden data. Despite these challenges, less than half of the organizations feel confident in their ability to protect files during critical processes such as uploads, transfers, and third-party sharing.

The findings indicate a shift from legacy point solutions to unified, multi-layered platforms that incorporate technologies like multiscanning, Content Disarm & Reconstruction (CDR), and adaptive sandboxing. By 2026, two-thirds of enterprises are expected to adopt these advanced technologies to enhance their security frameworks. George Prichici, VP of Products at OPSWAT, emphasized the necessity of a multi-layered defense approach to build resilient and scalable security in the AI era.
