Gemini has introduced Gemini CLI, an open-source AI agent that integrates directly into developers' terminals, according to the project's GitHub repository. This tool provides developers with lightweight access to Gemini's capabilities, allowing for tasks such as content generation, problem-solving, and task management.

Gemini CLI is designed to enhance the command line experience by offering powerful AI functionalities, including code understanding, file manipulation, and command execution. It is integrated with Google’s AI coding assistant, Gemini Code Assist, enabling prompt-driven, AI-first coding in both VS Code and Gemini CLI.

The tool is available for free to individual developers who log in with a personal Google account, providing access to Gemini 2.5 Pro with a generous usage allowance of 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day. For professional developers requiring more extensive use, options for usage-based billing or upgraded licenses are available.

Gemini CLI is fully open-source under the Apache 2.0 license, encouraging developers to contribute to its development by reporting bugs, suggesting features, and submitting code improvements. The tool's extensibility allows for customization and integration with existing workflows, making it a versatile addition to any developer's toolkit.
