Georgia Power Gets Approval for OpenAI Power Contract in Georgia

Georgia Power's contract to serve OpenAI's Effingham County project has been approved by Georgia regulators. The deal covers 3,200 megawatts of new demand, with OpenAI set to pay infrastructure costs and provide flexible demand response.
Georgia Power's contract to serve OpenAI's Effingham County project has been approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission, the utility announced in a press release.
The agreement covers 3,200 megawatts of new demand. OpenAI will pay the full cost of the infrastructure needed to serve the project and has committed to as much as 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response, allowing Georgia Power to reduce power delivery to the facility during periods of high demand.
Georgia Power said projected incremental revenue from new large load customers is expected to provide about $950 million per year in savings. The company expects a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours per month to save at least $15 per month beginning in 2029, or $180 per year, up from a prior commitment of $102 per year.
The utility said total customer benefits are projected at $2.847 billion from 2029 to 2031. The contract was filed with the Georgia PSC in July.
