China's generative AI user base passes 700 million

More than half of China's internet users used generative AI by June 2026, with question answering the most common use.

China's generative AI user base surpassed 700 million by the end of June 2026, up from 602 million at the end of 2025, according to China Daily. The penetration rate among internet users exceeded 50 percent, Xinhua reports, citing the China Internet Network Information Center.

The report found that 76 percent of users relied on generative AI to answer questions. Other uses included creating or processing images, video and text, as well as producing meeting summaries. Use of AI assistants and productivity tools for office work more than doubled from a year earlier.

China had 10,740 companies working on large models, AI agents, robotics and related fields as of June. Most were concentrated in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The report also said China's first domestic AI computing cluster with 100,000 graphics processing units had entered service.
