Children's Mercy Introduces Advanced Genetic Test for Faster Diagnoses

September 23, 2025
Children's Mercy has unveiled a groundbreaking long-read sequencing test that significantly improves the speed and accuracy of diagnosing rare genetic conditions in children, as announced in a press release.

Children's Mercy has introduced a pioneering long-read sequencing (LRS) test that enhances the speed and accuracy of diagnosing rare genetic conditions in children, announced in a press release. This innovative test, which utilizes the 5-base HiFi LRS system, has been shown to increase diagnostic success rates by 10% compared to traditional methods.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics, involved 235 children who underwent the new LRS test. Results indicated that families received diagnoses in less than a month on average, a significant improvement over the 91 days typically required by conventional testing methods. The LRS test also reduces the need for multiple rounds of testing, alleviating both emotional and financial burdens on families.

Children's Mercy is at the forefront of rare disease discovery through its Genomic Answers for Kids (GA4K) program, which has provided over 2,100 diagnoses in just four years. This program aims to expand access to advanced genomic technologies, offering hope to families seeking answers for their children's conditions.
