Caterpillar Expands AI Use From Mining Automation to Field Service
Caterpillar is applying AI to field service, manufacturing software, and internal operations after decades of work on autonomous mining systems, according to TechCrunch. CTO Jaime Mineart discussed the work at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas earlier this month.
The company sells automated haul trucks, drilling systems, underground loaders, dozers, remote controlled construction equipment, command center software, fleet management tools, and remote terrain intelligence. Mineart said Caterpillar is now applying lessons from mining to jobsites, quarries, and construction sites.
One tool is Cat AI Assistant, which lets field technicians use voice commands to retrieve repair procedures, troubleshoot problems, and identify parts before a repair. The assistant draws on Caterpillar data from about 1.6 million connected assets and more than 16 petabytes of structured data.
Caterpillar is also using AI for site scanning, digital twins in manufacturing, enterprise operations, and software work such as legacy code modernization, software testing, and defect detection. The company plans to spend $100 million over five years to train its 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics.
