Canadian News Publishers Sue Anthropic Over Claude Training
A coalition of Canadian news publishers is suing Anthropic in Ontario over the alleged use of their content to develop Claude, The Canadian Press reports. The plaintiffs are Postmedia, Torstar, The Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press.
The lawsuit, filed on October 6, alleges that Anthropic copied material from the publishers' websites without permission. It also claims the company breached website terms of service and bypassed technical measures intended to restrict copying.
The publishers allege that Anthropic uses their content to develop its AI models and also scrapes it on an ongoing basis in response to user prompts. The same companies, together with CBC/Radio-Canada, sued OpenAI in 2024; that case has not been settled. Anthropic had not responded to a request for comment, and the allegations have not been proven in court.
