British Columbia Sues OpenAI Over Tumbler Ridge Shooting

Sep 24, 2026
British Columbia alleges OpenAI failed to notify Canadian authorities after reviewers flagged the shooter's ChatGPT conversations months before the attack.

British Columbia sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in federal court in San Francisco over the February shooting in Tumbler Ridge, according to Forbes. The province alleges OpenAI failed to notify Canadian authorities after its systems and human reviewers flagged the shooter's ChatGPT conversations.

The complaint says OpenAI's monitoring system referred the account to a human review team in June 2025. Reviewers allegedly recommended contacting the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but company leaders rejected that recommendation and deactivated the account without an external warning.

The province seeks to recover costs incurred by the community and local government. It also asks the court to declare that OpenAI defectively designed ChatGPT and failed to provide adequate safety warnings.

The February attack killed eight people and injured at least 25 others. Altman apologized in April for OpenAI's failure to alert law enforcement about the account.

Tensordyne Napier: What If One Rack Could Do the Work of Nine?

Tensordyne

This Tensordyne whitepaper presents Napier, an inference-focused AI processor and rack-scale system based on the company’s TDN Math logarithmic number system. It examines infrastructure requirements for large mixture-of-experts and agentic models, compares major inference architecture approaches, and details the TDN AIP processor, TDN72 pod, TDN Link fabric, and Napier Ultra configuration. The paper reports simulation-based performance, cost, and accuracy-validation results, including Tensordyne’s projected comparison of one Napier rack with a nine-rack Nvidia Rubin plus Groq deployment; the chip is reported as taped out and in fabrication.
