Augment Code Introduces Intent, a macOS Workspace for Spec-Driven Development

January 30, 2026
Augment Code has launched Intent, a macOS desktop app available in Research Preview that enables developers to build software using multiple AI agents coordinated through specifications rather than code. The workspace supports parallel agents, Git integration, and state-of-the-art AI models including Opus 4.5, Sonnet 4.5, GPT 5.2, and Haiku.

Augment Code has launched a new macOS desktop app called Intent, available as a Research Preview, announced on the company’s website. The app enables spec-driven development, where specifications act as the source of truth for coordinating multiple AI agents that write and manage code.

Intent provides developers with a unified workspace that integrates Git operations, built-in browsing, custom layouts, and resumable sessions. It allows parallel agents to execute tasks under a central Coordinator that maintains synchronization between them. The platform supports Apple Silicon devices, with Windows access planned for a later release.

According to a company blog post, Intent is designed around the idea that as software development becomes increasingly parallel through agent collaboration, specifications must serve as the main coordination layer. The tool supports state-of-the-art models such as Opus 4.5, Sonnet 4.5, GPT 5.2, and Haiku, and includes features like automatic spec updates, built-in Git management, and Model Context Protocol support.

The company describes Intent as a step toward enabling developers to work at the level of intent rather than code, using AI agents that can execute plans derived from explicit specifications.
