Anthropic introduces the Economic Index to analyze AI's role in labor markets, revealing insights from millions of conversations with its chatbot, Claude.

Anthropic has announced the launch of the Anthropic Economic Index, an initiative designed to understand the effects of AI on labor markets and the economy. The Index's initial report provides unique data and analysis based on millions of anonymized conversations with Claude, Anthropic's AI chatbot. This data offers a detailed view of how AI is being integrated into real-world tasks across various sectors.

The report highlights that AI usage is more prevalent in fields such as software development and technical writing. Approximately 36% of occupations use AI in at least a quarter of their tasks, with AI being used more for augmentation (57%) than automation (43%). This indicates that AI is often used to enhance human capabilities rather than replace them.

Anthropic's research, facilitated by their Clio system, categorizes AI usage by occupational tasks, using data from the U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database. The findings show that AI is most commonly used in mid-to-high wage occupations, such as computer programming and data science, while its use is less common in both the lowest- and highest-paid roles.

Anthropic plans to continue this research, releasing updates every six months to track changes in AI adoption. The company is also open-sourcing its dataset to allow external researchers to build on their findings, inviting input from economists and policy experts to further explore AI's impact on the labor market.
