Imperial College London researchers have developed an AI-powered stethoscope that can diagnose heart conditions in just 15 seconds, according to The Guardian. This innovative tool can detect heart failure, heart valve disease, and abnormal heart rhythms by analyzing subtle differences in heartbeat and blood flow that are undetectable to the human ear.

The AI stethoscope, created in collaboration with Eko Health, is about the size of a playing card and uses a microphone to record heart sounds while simultaneously taking an ECG. The data is then sent to the cloud for analysis by AI algorithms, which can identify potential heart issues. The results are quickly sent back to a smartphone, allowing for rapid diagnosis.

A study involving approximately 12,000 patients from 200 GP surgeries in the UK demonstrated the effectiveness of the AI stethoscope. Patients examined with the device were twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart failure and three times more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation compared to those not using the technology. The findings were presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress in Madrid, highlighting the potential of this tool to improve early diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions.
