AI Cheating Fears Erode Trust Between Students and Teachers
A report from the Center for Digital Thriving says educators' focus on AI cheating is damaging trust between students and teachers, according to Education Week. The center is based at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
The center surveyed nationally representative samples of teachers and principals in spring 2025. When asked to describe an AI dilemma, 74% of teachers and 69% of principals cited an issue related to cheating.
Researchers also interviewed 31 teenagers ages 15 to 19 from April through June 2026. Students described fears of false accusations and pressure to use AI to keep pace with classmates. Some said they deliberately underperformed on assignments to avoid being accused of using AI.
