Abu Dhabi Shapes AI Governance in Healthcare

Abu Dhabi's Department of Health has led a roundtable to develop AI governance principles for healthcare, focusing on ethics and patient safety.

Department of Health – Abu Dhabi has spearheaded a significant initiative to establish AI governance principles in healthcare, as announced in a press release. This initiative was part of the Health Leaders Roundtable held during Abu Dhabi Global Health Week. The roundtable brought together global health leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities of integrating AI into healthcare systems.

The discussions focused on creating a Declaration on AI governance principles, emphasizing inclusion, equity, and ethics to ensure patient safety while fostering responsible innovation. Participants included academics, technology experts, and pharmaceutical leaders from various regions, including Africa, the US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The forthcoming Declaration aims to provide a globally accessible guideline for responsible AI deployment in healthcare, improving health outcomes and protecting patient rights. Key themes discussed included the need for transparent testing frameworks, collaborative ecosystems, responsible data access, and addressing the AI skills gap in healthcare systems.

This initiative builds on Abu Dhabi's rapidly advancing AI ecosystem, supported by the Global AI Healthcare Academy and the region's first Health Information Exchange, Malaffi, which facilitates secure, real-time access to patient data.
