China's Satellite Market Poised for Growth with Mega Constellation Plans

September 23, 2025
China's space infrastructure is rapidly expanding, driven by AI and 6G advancements, with satellite D2C services expected to reach 30 million users by 2030, according to ABI Research.

China's space infrastructure is undergoing rapid expansion, supported by advancements in AI, analytics, quantum computing, and 6G research. This growth is closely tied to China's ambitious plans for next-generation connectivity solutions. According to a press release, ABI Research projects that China's Serviceable Addressable Market (SAM) for satellite direct-to-consumer (D2C) subscription services could reach 30 million users by 2030, fueled by the launch of major Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) networks.

The expansion is bolstered by government policies such as the Space Silk Road Initiative and the Space-Ground Integrated Information Network Plan. Two mega constellations, Spacesail and Guowang, are currently launching satellites to build networks potentially comprising tens of thousands of satellites. The number of active satellites in orbit is expected to increase from over 17,000 in 2025 to over 48,000 by 2032, with over 35% originating from the 'big three' Chinese LEO networks, including the upcoming Honghu-3.

China's direct-to-cellular and direct-to-device opportunities are significant, given its large base of smartphone users and the proliferation of IoT devices. These services aim to maintain connectivity during outages and provide coverage overseas. The market is expected to be dominated by local players such as Spacesail, China Satellite Network Group's Guowang, and Hongqing Technology's Honghu-3, largely supported by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
