Apple Introduces Foundation Models Framework for On-Device AI
Apple Inc. has launched the Foundation Models framework, allowing developers to access its AI models offline on devices. This announcement was made at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025. The framework is part of Apple Intelligence, which powers various iOS features and capabilities according to Apple's blog post.
The Foundation Models framework supports Swift, Apple's programming language, enabling developers to integrate AI models with minimal code. It includes features like guided generation and tool calling, which enhance the development of AI-driven applications. Automattic and AllTrails are among the first to utilize this framework in their apps.
The framework is available for testing through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta set to launch next month. This initiative marks a significant step in Apple's strategy to provide developers with powerful AI tools while maintaining user privacy by processing data on-device.
